General Function Of Foundation Piers

As we mentioned in a previous post, foundation piers are an engineering solution that helps to take the weight of a structure’s foundation off of the soil, which may not be able to bear it, shifting it instead to firm bedrock or more stable soil in the area.

Round-Shaft Helical Foundation Piers

Magnum’s round-shaft helical foundation piers feature a steel tube shaft with a hollow circular cross section. We’ve found that round-shaft helical piers have a higher section modulus as well as a higher bending capacity.

These foundation piers are most often applied in new construction situations where buckling is the main concern.

Square-Shaft Helical Foundation Piers

Magnum’s square-shaft helical foundation piers feature a high-strength solid steel shaft that delivers a higher capacity-to-torque ratio. We’ve also found that they’re often easier to couple onto and install.

Because they’re not an efficient guard against buckling and have little to no lateral capacity, square-shaft helical foundation piers are best reserved for new construction on firm soils.
