Push Piers and Helical Piers

Foundation issues happen to thousands of people every year when the soil beneath the home moves and shifts between seasons. Structural problems are caused primarily by the soil, and to fix this, the foundation’s weight needs to be put on something other than the unstable soil and onto stable bedrock. This can be done by using push piers and helical piers. Call Magnum Piering to learn more.
Signs You Need a Piering System
There are a couple of signs that your home will need foundation repair. When the foundation has vertical movement such as sinking. Your chimney is not in line with your home. The soil that the house was built on can be classified as expansive, subsiding, hydro-compactable, or active. Other signs include sticking windows and doors, cracks in the interior and outside of the home, or bowed basement walls.
Push Piers
Long steel shafts, push piers are hydraulically pushed into the ground through the unstable soil until they reach solid bedrock. The experienced technicians at Magnum Piering can tell when the pier has reached the required depth by measuring the hydraulic pressure. The home’s weight can then be transferred from the unstable soil and onto the piers using steel pier brackets which are attached to the footing of the house. Push piers will go deeper than any other pier type and they will perform their job in most soils. Push piers can also help realign sticking doors or windows and straighten leaning chimneys.
Helical Piers
Similar to push piers, helical piers are giant screws that are driven into the ground by hydraulics. These screws will hold up the house through resistance power. Same as push piers, the home’s weight can be transferred from the soil to the helical piers by using steel brackets. Helical piers allow installation on older, or weaker foundation types. They will allow installation for new construction in unstable soils. Helical piers can aid in closing or shrinking of cracks in brick, stucco, or exterior finishes.
What They Don’t Do
Both helical and push piers will give your home a solid foundation, but there are some limitations. They can’t guarantee that the home will be perfectly flat or that level conditions will be reached. They also can’t guarantee that the water tightness or moisture level in the basement will be improved.
