Elizabeth Train Station

Elizabeth Train Station Project used a total of (46) helical piles. These piles have allowable capacities of up to 77 kips were used. The project was taken on to support new platforms. Piles were installed through an upper fill layer and down to a dense sand layer. Lengths ranged between 18 ft and 39 ft with center of pile as close as 6 ft to the edge of the railroad track. The Piles were cast into 30” diameter concrete columns. This was done in order to meet project lateral deflection criteria.

Description

Helical Piles Keep Rail Infrastructure Moving in a Constrained Urban Environment

The reconstruction of Elizabeth Train Station in Elizabeth, New Jersey required new inbound and outbound passenger platforms supported by a foundation system capable of meeting demanding structural and construction requirements. Working adjacent to active rail lines in a congested urban setting meant every aspect of the foundation installation had to maximize efficiency while minimizing disruption.

The Challenge

The project required foundation elements to be installed through an upper fill layer and into a dense sand bearing stratum while working as close as six feet from active railroad tracks. In addition to the restricted work area, the foundation system needed to provide high compression capacity and satisfy strict lateral deflection requirements for the new passenger platforms.

The MAGNUM Solution

MAGNUM® supplied 46 high-capacity helical piles, each designed with allowable compression capacities up to 77 kips, to support the station's new inbound and outbound platforms.

The piles were installed to depths ranging from approximately 18 to 39 feet, penetrating through the upper fill soils and terminating in dense sand. To achieve the required lateral performance, each pile was integrated into 30-inch diameter reinforced concrete columns, creating a foundation system capable of supporting both vertical and lateral structural demands.

The compact installation process allowed crews to work efficiently within the limited construction corridor while maintaining safe operations alongside active rail traffic.

The Result

The completed foundation system delivered the structural capacity and lateral stability required for the station reconstruction while accommodating the project's challenging site constraints. By combining high-capacity helical piles with reinforced concrete columns, the project team achieved a durable, long-term foundation solution that helped modernize one of New Jersey's busiest passenger rail facilities.
